In Class Essay

In all honesty, I came into this photography class believing that I knew all there was to know about photography. Since the start of this course, however, my perception of what makes a good photo has completely changed. I have always been able to distinguish between a well-taken and a poorly-taken picture, but I was not able to tell why one was better than the other. For the same reason, I have never been able to recreate many of the amazing pictures that I see on the internet or in magazines. I have learned a lot about the various elements that go into creating a good picture, including exposure, photography techniques, and much more. Although we learned a lot this year, there are some things that I wished we went more in depth to, such as taking portraits.        Spotting a good picture is a lot different than taking  a good picture; I really understood this after taking the course. By learning about shutter speed, aperture, and...

Portfolio

This picture is quite neat as the two subjects are walking away from the camera across an interestingly shaped bridge. There is some symmetry in the picture as the two sides of the bridge are seen from this angle. In addition, the picture shows the motion of the two people walking. This is a picture of a plant structure. It is quite pleasant to look at as it is created with an intriguing pattern. Most people will not have seen something like this before which makes it even more interesting. This is an example of Reflection Photography. The best aspect of this image would definitely be the clarity of the image on the surface of the water. Many photos that are taken using reflection often sacrifice clarity since the reflective surface is usually not smooth. I was lucky that on this day, the water remained very still which helped me produce an image of this quality. This picture was taken at the Armin Van Buuren Concert. The patterns created by the lasers were even ...

Recreate a Photo Assignment

Image
I tried to recreate the main part of the picture, which is the woman taking a selfie. The picture I took is similar in the sense that the position, attire, and accessories of the subject are the same as the original picture. The subject is also holding the phone in the same way as the original. The main difference in the picture I took is that it was taken indoors, as it was difficult to find the same kind of background as the original. The picture I took here is surprisingly quite similar to the original photo. The person closer to the camera is wearing practically the same outfit, and the person on the back is wearing something very similar. The positioning of the subject is spot on, and the background is plain in both pictures. The main difference in my photo was the lack of an identifiable age difference between the two people. In the original, there appears to be at least a twenty-five-year gap between the two people, but in my picture, the two lo...

Macro Photography Assignment

I took this image of a white flower by using a combination of manually holding the camera close to the subject and digital zoom. The image has managed to stay clear even though it is quite a bit zoomed in. I chose to take a picture of this since the white flower contrasts the green plants that surround it. This is one of the positives of my picture. One thing I would change about this is next time I would try and blur the surrounding, and keep the flower clear. This would enhance the appearance of the entire image.

Forced Perspective Photography Assgnment

My goal for both of these pictures was to experiment with depth of field to create an image that makes the object in the background a lot smaller compared to the foreground. For the first picture, I acquired a miniature monument of the Eiffel Tower and placed a toy dinosaur in front of it. After playing around with the angles, I was able to create an image that makes the dinosaur look the same size as the Eiffel Tower, which is a massive structure in real life. For the second picture, I got my sister to hold out her hand and instructed my dad to move into a certain spot in the background. After numerous attempts, I was able to create a picture where it looks as if my dad has shrunk and is balancing on my sisters hand.        For the first picture, I would like to change the background since it looks a little bit fake. If I took this same picture outside with the horizon as the background, it would look much more realistic as the Eiffel To...

Double Colors Exposure Assignment

Image
I began this assignment by first taking multiple pictures of my subject to ensure I had several options to pick from. Once I uploaded the three pictures to Photoshop, I overlapped the different layers to ultimately overlap my subject on top of himself. I then entered the blending options in the fx window and played with the RGB combinations. This turned out to be an easy assignment, however it was a little difficult to ensure the subject was visible. To fix this, I applied the "Difference" filter on the 2 edge layers, which also ended up giving it a cool negative effect.

Reflection Photography Assignment

Image
My goal for taking this picture was to present a large boat in a alternative matter using the laws of reflection. I did happen to take a picture of the boat normally, but since it was floating on water I decided to use it as a reflective surface which gives the photo an interesting element. It may take the viewer a couple seconds to orient themselves when first presented with the photo, however I believe that this is part of the experience. The best aspect of this image would definitely be the clarity of the image on the surface of the water. Many photos that are taken using reflection often sacrifice clarity since the reflective surface is usually not smooth. I was lucky that on this day, the water remained very still which helped me produce an image of this quality.
